Each more than 7,500 participants from around the country travel to Houston, Texas to help honor, celebrate black women courageously fighting breast cancer. Why do we need to support Black Breast Cancer survivors?
Breast Cancer is the most fatal health issue for Black women.
  • African American women have a 31% breast cancer mortality rate—the highest of any U.S. racial or ethnic group. (Breast Cancer Prevention Partners)
  • Black women are 42% more likely to die of breast cancer (Breast Cancer Prevention Partners)
  • Black women under 35 get breast cancer at two times the rate of white women and die three times the rate. (Race, Breast Cancer Subtypes, and Survival in the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, Journal of the American Medical Association)
  • Black women have a 2.3 times higher odds of being diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast cancer.
  • Black women fear a cancer diagnosis and often avoid screening. (NIH)

About the Stop the Silence Walk & Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP):

Launched in 2006, the Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP) assists breast cancer survivors, nationwide who are currently in treatment and facing financial challenges.  Up to $350.00 in financial assistance is paid directly to third-party providers and covers rent and utilities. Over the last 15 years, the Breast Cancer Assistance Program has assisted thousands of survivors nationwide. In 2021, Sisters Network Inc. Breast Cancer Assistance Program provided over 100,000 in financial support to breast cancer survivors.
BCAP is also an early detection program that provides free mammograms and ultrasounds to non-diagnosed women. Nearly 1000 women received free mammograms in 2021.
A portion of the funds raised from the Stop the Silence 5k Walk/Run help support the Breast Cancer Assistance Program each year. BCAP is open in the Spring and Fall.
